Cowboy Carter

Being a lifelong fan of Beyonce and from the deep south, the Cowboy Carter album resonated with me in more ways than one. As the album is a reclamation of her home, I wanted this look to be a reclamation of mine. Taking inspiration from the Mississippi state flower, the Magnolia is a symbol that something beautiful can grow in the ugliest of places. In order to convey to idea, I created to persona of Miss BLK Magnolia Ablaze, an untouchable being and avatar of the Magnolia Tree.

A true labor of love, this Head-to-toe custom look by Zaheim Kaon is a manifestation of my story. Growing up in Mississippi isn't easy when you look like me, but those scars are what make me unique. This is symbolized by the distressed and burned details in this look.  A repurposed table cloth was used for the top, paired with a reconstructed pair of bespoke Wrangler jeans, a custom magnolia-inspired satin cowboy hat. The cherry atop it all was the custom sash trimmed in real magnolia leaves that i burned to continue the singed motif of the overall look.

There are also a plethora of callbacks to the album within the outfit including

a Levi's Denim Patch as a nod to LEVII'S JEANS, red stitching as a nod to the YA YA lyric:

"whole lotta red in that white and blue.", and the misspelling of 'Magnolia' as a nod to the Beyince cover art.
